Evolvement

There was a time when I’d scroll through photos from some of the breeders I admired and instantly know where that puppy came from. They had a signature. A certain expression. A recognizable structure. A look that belonged to their program.

I remember thinking “One day, I want someone to see one of my puppies and know exactly where it can’t from without ever asking.”
Not because of a logo. Not because of a name. But because of the dogs themselves. That dream has quietly become a reality.

Over the years, Kentuckiana Poodles has evolved generation after generation. Currently we are into our 4th and 5th generations, Every breeding has had a purpose. Every keeper has been chosen with a vision in mind. Every difficult decision, every lesson learned, every success and every setback has shaped where we are today.
I wanted beautiful dogs, yes, but I also wanted sound structure, thoughtful genetics, healthy foundations, and personalities that make people fall in love with them.

People have told me for years, “You can’t have it all.” Why not? Why should we settle?

Sometimes this journey means moving forward. Sometimes it means taking a step back. Sometimes you realize you’ve started drifting away from the picture you had in your mind, and you have to be willing to redirect yourself. That was my vision with Venus, for example. She reminded me of exactly what I was chasing. I knew the look. I knew the expression. I also knew I needed enough diversity in my program to preserve that look while continuing to strengthen the structure behind it. It’s a balancing act that never truly ends. Then there’s Creed. I love his body. I love his heart. I love his expression. His eye shape. His skull. His muzzle. His long, lean outline. He compliments my Zeke and Kopa lines in a way that just feels… right.

When I look at those puppies together, I don’t just see beautiful dogs. I see MY dogs. Better balance. Familiar expressions. Zeke’s incredible temperament shining through. Creed’s unmistakable expression. Puppies that, over time, have become undeniably recognizable as Kentuckiana Poodles.

Just the other day, a good friend reminded me of something I think every breeder needs to hear.

“Go back to your foundation. Build on your own lines. Stop chasing what everyone else thinks is the next big thing. Trust what you’ve spent years creating.”

That really stuck with me. It’s so easy in this world to get distracted by the newest trend, the newest stud, the newest color, or what everyone else is producing. But the best programs aren’t built by chasing everyone else. They’re built by knowing exactly where you’re going. Find people who understand your vision. Surround yourself with mentors and friends who challenge you to become better, not people who convince you to abandon what makes your program unique. Find what you love. Study it. Protect it. Refine it. And don’t stop until someone can look at one of your puppies and say, “I know exactly where that puppy came from.”
With growth comes criticism. The more you build, the more people will try to tear it down. That’s simply part of chasing something bigger than yourself. I’ve learned not to let that define me. Because at the end of the day, the dogs speak louder than the opinions.

My vision has never been to create perfect dogs. My vision has always been to create better dogs than I had yesterday. Generation after generation. And I can honestly say… for the first time, I feel like my signature is beginning to reveal itself. That is one of the most rewarding feelings a breeder could ever experience.
